HOUR ONE PLAY HARDSterling is off today on assignment, so Jason Spiess is joined by Mike Marcil of Orange Property Management.

Mike and Jason begin the conversation about the “public trust of the fourth estate” known as the media. Mike recalls some stories from his childhood growing up as nephew to William Marcil Sr., one of the most respected men of all time in the media industry.

William Marcil, Forum Communications, was one of the only individuals in the United States who owned a newspaper, radio station and television station due to FCC rules and regulations involving consolidated and centralized media in a market.

Mike remembers meeting President Ronald Regan as well as impactful Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner conversations about the responsibility of the media.

The interview transitions into investing in the oil and gas industry and state budgets tied to it. According to Marcil, North Dakota had unprecedented business in 2020, in fact one example, he cites that the Bank of North Dakota’s numbers grew more in one year than over the past 100.

Mike shares some insight on trends in Western North Dakota regarding housing and companies doing background checks.

In HOUR TWO we WORK HARD with our Newsmaker Interview: Bismarck (ND) Mayor Steve Bakken

Bismarck Mayor Steve Bakken gives an update from the state capital as well as his view on President Joe Biden’s executive orders, including his decision to halt the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Mayor Bakken explain that pipeline are considered “critical infrastructure” and should be treated as such by the government rather than using pipelines for political posturing.

He also expresses his concern over the potential loss of jobs and safety issues in the state. Adding trucks on the road and rail cars on the tracks ripples into other costs and issues that are being ignored or suppressed in public discussion.

Mayor Bakken explains how NIMBY, Not In My Back Yard, is driving much of the climate change discussion and disconnection with oil and gas.
