The Deals Continue At NAPE

With over 400 exhibiting companies, 300 prospects and millions of acres registered, the NAPE expo floor is open for business — and dealmakers and decision-makers are connecting, reconnecting and making deals happen!

Zach and Allison Corcoran of Sir Drake Oil and Gas Co. in Corpus Christi, Texas, hit pay dirt on Thursday morning with the sale of a South Texas Frio Formation prospect in Jackson County, Texas, with potential reserves of 750,000 BO.

“We are excited about selling our deal and have been very successful through the NAPE Network,” said Zach Corcoran, president, noting that Sir Drake sold a Nueces County prospect in 2019 that is now a successfully drilled and producing conventional well.

“We enjoy making new connections and enjoy the upbeat atmosphere,” added Allison Corcoran, vice president. “Please come visit us for future South Texas prospects and production.”

W.A. Westmoreland, CEO/president of TM2,typically comes to NAPE for the networking but is exhibiting for the first time this year. “We have a good horizontal prospect to show so we decided to get a booth. We’re looking for capital, and we’ve had lots of excitement and made a lot of contacts. It’s probably going to sell soon. It’s been a fantastic experience being an
exhibitor,” he said.

EXPO EXHIBITS
From majors to independents, E&Ps to service providers, traditional fuel sources to renewables, the NAPE show floor opened Thursday morning with a wealth of opportunities for dealmaking.

NAPE’s robust marketplace provides an unrivaled venue for buying, selling and trading energy prospects and producing properties — complete with capital providers, law firms, new technologies and other support services to help close the deal.

“Oxy enjoys attending NAPE to let the industry know about our innovations and for exposure to the latest trends,” said Bill Irons, Oxy vice president of land. “We appreciate the opportunity to participate and the efforts put into this event each year by its organizers. We design our booth so attendees can experience Oxy’s story — to learn about the cutting-edge next steps we are taking as a company.”

PROSPECT PREVIEWS
Throughout the day at the NAPE Theater, exhibiting companies gave brief “show-and-tell” presentations about domestic and international prospects available on the expo floor.

CHARITIES LUNCHEON
Since 2009, over $4.75 million has been donated through our NAPE Charities event to help nonprofits that support U.S. veterans. This year’s deserving recipients of $85,000 each are Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, the PenFed Foundation and TADSAW (Train a Dog — Save a Warrior). To donate, text the word

NAPE to 71760
NAPE Charities donations are made possible thanks to the support of the NAPE Operators Committee and NAPE sponsoring companies as well as a generous $1 million donation given by America’s oilmen in 2019 in honor of the late President George H.W. Bush. This donation is being distributed in $100,000 increments over a 10-year period.

The 2022 Charities Luncheon featured a Q&A with former Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo — the first American to have served in those two Cabinet posts. His service was the culmination of four decades of a wide-ranging set of experiences that reflect core American values: hard work, risk-taking, free-market competition, individual liberty, opportunity, national sovereignty and a strong faith in God.

EXPO LUNCH
During the Expo lunch buffet — which included the ever-popular NAPE fried chicken — Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt shared about his journey from entrepreneur to governor, the state’s energy past and present, as well as the success of its “all of the above approach” to energy.

“As the industry evolves, I want everybody to know Oklahoma will protect our way of life in this industry, and we are open for business. In Oklahoma, we believe in everything energy innovation,” he said.

Oklahoma is No. 6 in the country in oil production, No. 4 in natural gas, No. 2 in wind energy and 40% of its energy comes from renewable sources, Stitt said. “We believe in an all-of-the-above approach. We have to have a reliable grid. And we’re doing it all without the heavy hand of government regulation,” he added. “We believe in a level playing field — let businesses go compete. Don’t pick winners and losers. Let the industry innovate.”

RENEWABLE ENERGY PAVILION
Sponsored by Marathon Capital, the Renewable Energy Pavilion also returned for 2022, providing plenty of opportunities for learning, networking and dealmaking through education sessions, renewables prospect previews and an early cocktail reception

“Following the success of last year’s inaugural expansion of NAPE into the renewable sector, we are excited to continue to expand our marketplace to include renewable projects as NAPE becomes the all-encompassing energy expo where deals happen,” NAPE Operators Committee Chair Bryan E. Hennigan, CPL, said as he welcomed attendees.

“I am excited to attend my first NAPE event and to meet attendees who are at the forefront of the oil and gas industry, particularly with independent players,” said Talib Syed, P.E., petroleum engineer at Talib Syed & Associates Inc.

He presented “Hydrogen and Energy 101: Role of CCUS.”

“I hope the attendees will have a better understanding of the energy transition that is currently underway as we transition to a low carbon economy to address global warming and greenhouse gas emissions concerns,” he said. “In this transition, the hydrogen economy will be a significant player and CCUS — carbon capture, utilization and storage — will also play an important role in enabling the energy transition to succeed.”

Lee Bratcher, president and founder of the Texas Blockchain Council, was excited to watch the connections between Bitcoin miners and oil and gas operators.

“There are many synergies here that will come to fruition in the years ahead. I hope attendees understand that Bitcoin miners represent an energy buyer of first and last resort,” Bratcher said.

He and Collin Bird, president and CIO of AIC Holdings, presented “Unlocking Stranded Energy Assets With Bitcoin Mining” in the REP.

“The energy transition is a complex problem that requires a variety of technologies to solve in a way that ensures reliability and affordability for power consumers,” Bird said. “I am excited to hear the perspective of others at NAPE on energy transition — what is an immediate and actionable need for these corporations and what stands in the way of them achieving their targets,” said Joan Hutchinson, managing director of Offtake Advisory at Marathon Capital LLC, who presented “Energy Transition & Tax Equity” in the REP with Matt Shanahan, managing director and head of Tax Equity at Marathon Capital.

“I hope attendees will see the potential to build their business around opportunities in the energy transition — see the potential versus assuming it will be a cost or drag on economics,” Hutchinson said.

CASE COMPETITION
Wednesday evening, the AAPL Educational Foundation hosted a reception for the four finalist teams in the 2022 NAPE/TCU Energy Innovation Case Competition.

“We are thrilled to host you at NAPE,” said James “Jim” T. Devlin, CPL, president of AAPL. “I encourage you to take advantage of every second while you’re here. The next two days everybody who is worth their salt in the energy industry will be here. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime.”

With $40,000 in prize money on the line, teams were given five hours to provide solutions to a pressing question: “How can U.S. E&Ps leverage their energy transition strategy to reduce global energy poverty?”

A panel of industry leaders served as judges. The team from TCU won first place and $20,000, followed by Rice University in second place with $10,000, the University of North Carolina in third with $6,000 and the University of Texas at Austin in fourth with $4,000.

“I didn’t know what to expect but it was very insightful,” said Will Boone, CPL, and third vice president of AAPL, one of the competition judges. “Each team had a different analysis and unique ideas. It was a tough decision. The future of energy is bright with the students we have in our program.”

All four teams presented on the expo floor Thursday morning.

CONNECTIONS & CONVERSATIONS
