This year’s keynote speaker is former Secretary of Defense and retired Marine General James N. Mattis. One of the preeminent leaders of his generation, Mattis has spent nearly five decades in the service of his country. Renowned for his diligent study of war and dogged efforts on the battlefield, Mattis is described as a principled commander who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.

In a Q&A moderated by Roger A. Soape, CPL, president of Roger A. Soape Inc. and a former AAPL president, the general shared his battled-tested tips on how to lead and empower individuals.

Drawing from personal experiences as well as from historical figures, Mattis offered insight on a variety of topics, including his three C’s of leadership; mentorship; leading the young generation just entering the industry; fostering a culture of diversity, inclusion and respect; the importance of having the space to make mistakes; and remaining calm in crisis.

On Tuesday, NAPE Week seminars offered insight from industry experts on a wide range of current topics.

At AAPL’s Solar, Net Revenue Interest and Wind Energy Leasing Seminar, experts discussed what in-house oil and gas land professionals need to know if a solar developer wants to build a project in their company’s leasehold area; which calculations justify asset price; and wind energy leasing and title curative.

Connecting the functional and commercial aspects of the industry, IPAA’s Oil & Gas Overview Course covered industry structure, petroleum geology and exploration, mineral rights and leasing, drilling and completion, as well as development and production operations.

AAPG’s Emerging Trends in Oil and Gas & Energy included brief keynotes, fireside chats and Q&A sessions. The morning session focused on energy assets and funding/finance and the afternoon session turned the spotlight on technology ventures, new technology and data.

In another NAPE Week seminar, speakers gave a practical review of the AIPN Offshore Drilling Contract (2020), examining such key aspects as term, basic responsibilities, indemnity, insurance, termination and remedies for breach.

Exclusive to the NAPE Network is this year’s NAPE Charities Keynote. Since 2009, over $4.75 million has been donated through our annual NAPE Charities event to help nonprofits that support U.S. veterans. 2021 NAPE Expo Charities Fund recipients include 10 CAN Inc., American Military Family Inc. and Operation Finally Home.
