‘NAPE Day’ Celebrates 30 Years of Dealmaking with EBC Featuring Top CEOs, Sitting Governors

By official proclamation, the city of Houston declared Wednesday, Feb. 1, NAPE Day. NAPE — the place where deals happen — kicked off its celebration of 30 years of dealmaking in epic style. The NAPE Energy Business Conference welcomed CEOs from top energy companies and sitting governors from energy producing states.

Chesapeake Energy President and CEO Nick Dell’Osso and Commonwealth LNG LLC founder and Chairman Paul Varello were part of an LNG panel. Devon Energy President & CEO Rick Muncrief was the keynote speaker of the EBC luncheon, which also honored the inaugural class of NAPE Hall of Fame inductees. CEO David Lawler accepted bpx’s HOF award. And the EBC concluded with NAPE’s first Governors Panel featuring Oklahoma Gov. J. Kevin Stitt and Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon. (Texas Gov. Greg Abbott had to cancel last minute because of icy travel conditions in Austin.)
Carl Campbell, CPL, moderated a discussion with Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt and Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon at the Governors Panel Discussion.
It was a packed house for the Governors Panel Discussion.
“NAPE Day is a perfect way to celebrate NAPE’s 30th anniversary. Our speaker lineup for the Energy Business Conference is one of the best we’ve ever assembled with two incumbent governors, three company top executives, two market intelligence experts, three featured technical presentations and the president of one of the biggest energy investment banks,” said David R. Cape, CPL, chair of the NAPE Operators Committee.

Also on Wednesday, the four finalist teams in the NAPE/TCU Energy Innovation Case Competition competed for $40,000 in prize money. The NAPE Job Fair connected job seekers with hiring firms, and the day’s festivities concluded with the popular NAPE Icebreaker networking event featuring a special 30th anniversary twist — a live performance by The Spazmatics.

Daniel Morris of Star of Texas Petroleum Co. in Houston has been to every NAPE from the very beginning.

“It’s all about the connections,” he said. “I do sell prospects here and I find prospects here, but it’s really about the people I see. I live in Houston and there are people from Dallas, Austin and Louisiana, but also from California and New York, and every now and then, I have a guy from Israel coming over. So that’s what it’s all about for me.”

CEOs from top energy companies reconnected at NAPE: Devon’s Rick Muncrief, bpx’s Dave Lawler and Chesapeake’s Nick Dell’Osso.

NEW DEALMAKER IN TOWN

Have you met NAPE Dealmaker, the newest member of the NAPE team? Weather permitting, Dealmaker will join NAPE dealmakers and decision-makers outside the GRB from 9-11 a.m. Feb. 2.

A member of the Houston Police Department Mounted Patrol Unit and sponsored by NAPE, Dealmaker is a 6-year-old dapple-gray quarter horse purchased from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison system, where he began his training with the prisoners. He is ridden by veteran Senior Police Officer Randy Myrick, head trainer of the Houston Police Department Mounted Patrol Unit.

Officers note that Dealmaker will come to them when whistled at and is a very personable, people-loving horse.
