Ask The Crude Life: What is EOR in the Bakken?

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is a widely used method for increasing the amount of oil recovered from an oil reservoir. The Bakken Shale Formation, located in North Dakota and Montana, is one of the most productive shale formations in the United States. As the production from the Bakken Formation has increased, so has the need for improved methods of oil recovery. The latest technology available in the marketplace today offers increased efficiency, improved safety, and cost savings.

One of the most widely used EOR methods in the Bakken Formation is hydraulic fracturing, also known as “fracking.” This method involves the injection of large amounts of water, sand, and chemicals into the shale formation in order to create fractures in the rock and allow oil to flow more freely. This process has been used in the Bakken Formation since the late 1990s and has been instrumental in increasing the production of oil from the region.

Another method of enhanced oil recovery used in the Bakken Formation is steam injection. This method involves the injection of steam into the shale formations in order to heat the oil and reduce its viscosity, allowing it to flow more easily. This method is often used in conjunction with other EOR methods, such as hydraulic fracturing, in order to maximize the amount of oil recovered.

In addition to these traditional methods, there have been some recent advances in the technology available for enhanced oil recovery in the Bakken Formation. One of the most promising technologies is the use of horizontal drilling. This method involves drilling a horizontal wellbore into the shale formation in order to access a larger area of the formation and increase the area of contact between the wellbore and the oil. This method has been shown to significantly increase the amount of oil recovered from the formation.

Another technology that has been developed in the past few years is the use of carbon dioxide injection. This method involves injecting carbon dioxide into the shale formation in order to reduce the viscosity of the oil and increase its flow. This technology has been shown to be effective in increasing the amount of oil recovered from the formation.

Finally, the use of nanotechnology has also been explored as a means of enhancing oil recovery in the Bakken Formation. This technology involves the use of nanomaterials, such as nanoparticles and nanotubes, to increase the amount of oil recovered from the formation. These nanomaterials are capable of increasing the amount of contact between the wellbore and the oil, thus increasing the amount of oil recovered from the formation.

The Bakken Formation has seen great advances in the technologies available for enhanced oil recovery. These technologies have allowed for increased efficiency, improved safety, and cost savings. By utilizing these technologies, oil producers in the region are able to increase the amount of oil recovered from the formation and improve their bottom line.

Historically, Heins has been a writer on subjects ranging from broadband and the US electricity grid, to environmental, energy and regulatory topics.

Heins is also a vocal advocate of the Internet of Everything, free trade, and global issues affecting the third of our planet that still lives in abject poverty.

Heins is troubled by the Carbon Tax, Cap & Trade, Carbon Offsets and Carbon Credits, because he questions their efficacy in solving the climate problem, are too gamable by rent seekers, and are fraught with unreliable accounting.

Heins worries that climate and other environmental reporting in the US and Europe has become too politicized, ignores the essential role carbon-based energy continues to play in the lives of billions, demonizes the promise and practicality of Nuclear Energy and cheerleads for renewable energy sources that cannot solve the real world problems of scarcity and poverty.
