Here are this week’s guests for The Crude Life Week In Review Episode 480.

The Crude Life Content News Correspondent Ken Lavin interviews Harold Hamm, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Continental Resources, after he spoke at Wildcatters Wednesday at The Petroleum Alliance of Oklahoma. Hamm talks about the importance of synergy and collaboration in energy, education and empathy. Understanding each energy’s strengths rather than politicizing the science.

Hamm talks about the importance of synergy and collaboration in energy, education and empathy. Understanding each energy’s strengths rather than politicizing the science.

“Energy plays a tremendous role in all our lives, we know that,” Hamm said. “Finding carbon solutions is paramount for us right now.”

Kenley Nebeker, executive director, TrainND Northwest and Levi Perkins, Perkins Electric Innovations explain what The EVolution Hybrid is all about.

“One of the things we looked at with the EVolution Hybrid is the future of the transportation and trucking industry,” Kenley Nebeker, executive director, TrainND Northwest said. “We are really trying to find a way to expose our students and the community to the potential that lies within the electric truck, or in this case a hybrid truck.  I’ve never been a believer in all-one-way or another.”

Nebeker is referring to an all EV solution or an all fossil fuel solution.  Nebeker believes this project will shine a light on how a “marriage” between the two concepts will ultimately become a viable solution to an energy transition.

Midland (TX) Mayor Patrick Payton talks about the growth happening in the Permian Basin.

“The economic evolution, a lot of people talk about economic diversification, but any diversification has to be tied to the oil and gas industry,” Payton said. “You’re listeners know this, but most people do not understand how many companies and organizations are involved in oil and gas. From distribution warehouses of goods and services to the people who are making the roads so you can get out to the rigs and frac locations, so anything the two (Mayors and cities) of us can do, as Secretary Evans calls it, ‘in the heartbeat of the most secure and safe oil and gas region in the world’ then we have to do it alongside that industry and see what we can do to improve it.”

Mayor Payton continued the conversation into the growth and expansion still happening in the Permian, despite global and domestic challenges.

“I was on another radio show this morning and so many people think that the oil industry just pokes holes in the ground and oil just comes out,” Payton said. “They do not realize, and it’s easy to say that over the past three-to-four years this industry has faced an onslaught of really beaucracy coming after it impacting capital investments.”

Payton believes despite Russia, Ukraine and other political obstacles, the Permian Basin communities are growing together and assisting each other for a common community goal. Payton sees more work ahead, however, in more areas than infrastructure.

Tara Norris Rasmuson sat down with host Jason Spiess to discuss her journey from petroleum to publishing.  Tara was a landman (aka landwoman …. aka land negotiator) while working in oil and gas. Now she is the publisher of the Greeley Lifestyle Magazine.

“I started out at the bottom answering phones in the oil and gas industry,” Tara said. “I really just worked my way up.  I studied Petroleum Land Management at Oklahoma City University.  I then got an internship with a little group called Tekton Energy in Highlands Ranch and they had a project here in Windsor Colorado.”

Windsor is just a “stones throw” away from Greeley, which is the home rule municipality city that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Weld County.  Weld County hosts approximately 20,000 well pads or active well sites and producing roughly 85-90% of Colorado’s oil development.

Before Tara’s internship and work answering phones, she absorbed a respect for the industry through her geography and father’s profession.

“I actually grew up in the industry, my dad’s a geologist, so I watched my entire life the ups and the downs of the industry,” Tara said. “I saw a lot of people leave and I felt really sad when they had to leave oil and gas.  But now I feel so much gratitude having now transiting out of the oil and gas industry, now I can look at it from a different lens.”

Tara’s work in oil and gas continued after her start up and in Colorado, and she found herself with numerous opportunities to dive into the real culture of industry.  From the travel to the colorful personalities to the corporate structures to being on the front line of town hall meetings discussing oil and gas projects and community collaborations.

Furthermore, Tara believes there are “so many good stories in oil and gas” because she has seen them first hand.

Historically, Heins has been a writer on subjects ranging from broadband and the US electricity grid, to environmental, energy and regulatory topics.

Heins is also a vocal advocate of the Internet of Everything, free trade, and global issues affecting the third of our planet that still lives in abject poverty.

Heins is troubled by the Carbon Tax, Cap & Trade, Carbon Offsets and Carbon Credits, because he questions their efficacy in solving the climate problem, are too gamable by rent seekers, and are fraught with unreliable accounting.

Heins worries that climate and other environmental reporting in the US and Europe has become too politicized, ignores the essential role carbon-based energy continues to play in the lives of billions, demonizes the promise and practicality of Nuclear Energy and cheerleads for renewable energy sources that cannot solve the real world problems of scarcity and poverty.
