The Crude Life‘s Jason Spiess joined Steve Bakken on Talk of the Town on SuperTalk 1270AM Bismarck to talk about ESG, Harold Hamm‘s donation and why Mercedes Benz just separated itself from the pack.
Host Steve Bakken starts the conversation out by recapping the donation of $10 million to the University of Mary from the Harold Hamm Foundation and a $2 million gift from Continental Resources. It is the largest single donation in the school’s history and believed to be the largest-ever charitable gift given for education in the footprint of the Bakken Shale Formation, western North Dakota and eastern Montana.
The two discussed the significance of the gift to the university and industry, but also highlighting the ESG attributes. ESG is an acronym for Environmental Social Governance, and is the newest marker for identifying a score to access projected financial risks. Spiess explains some of the pitfalls with ESG, but focusing on why this latest gift announcement is a positive step for the industry.

Jason also talks about how Mercedes Benz is taking control of their narrative by telling the story of “green steel”. Rather than try and keep up with the Telsa, Audi and Ford EV Batteries and Vehicles, Mercedes Benz has become ESG friendly through steel.
Steel makes up nearly 9 percent of greenhouse gas emissions so figuring out ways to reduce the carbon footprint in steel, could snowball exponentially into other areas.
