Carbon Capture Innovations Showing Industry The Climate's Future Can Be Bright
/

Brandy Johnson, Chief Technology and Engineering Officer, Babcock & Wilcox,  joins Jason Spiess to discuss carbon capture and storage technologies.   Johnson talks in detail about their new ClimateBright™ and how it is seeing productive results for industry.

“The ClimateBright suite of decarbonization technologies are designed to help utilities and industry aggressively combat greenhouse gas emissions and climate change pressures,”  Johnson said. “ClimateBright technologies further strengthen Babcock & Wilcox’s commitment to clean energy progress and to helping customers worldwide address the most significant environmental challenge in industrial processes and energy generation.”

B&W’s ClimateBright™ suite of technologies have the potential to capture CO2 and includes the ability to produce hydrogen. These technologies have application for a wide range of industries including energy production, food manufacturing, steel, cement, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, carbon black, and pulp and paper.

“When they are talking about that piece (CSUS & Carbon Capture) they are really talking about the entire value chain.  From isolating the carbon dioxide to beneficially using it or sequestering it and storing it permanently,”  Brandy said.  “In the oil and gas industry storage often means using CO2 for enhanced oil recovery.”

Brandy adds that BW has other carbon technologies as well, but the recent discoveries in ClimateBright has brought it to the forefront as another piece of the puzzle to the evolving supply chain in energy extraction.

Some of B&W’s ClimateBright™ solutions include:

  • BrightLoop™ technology to produce hydrogen, steam or syngas from a variety of fuels or feedstocks while isolating CO2 for capture or other industrial purposes
  • SolveBright™ regenerable solvent technology for carbon capture processes
  • OxyBright™ combustion process ideal for CO2 isolation and sequestration applications
  • BrightGen™ hydrogen combustion technology

Babcock & Wilcox will be speaking and presenting at the 43rd Annual EPIC Conference in Bismarck, ND January 25-27.

Brandy is responsible for developing and executing B&W’s technology strategy across the company including its ClimateBright™ suite of products and services. She also leads B&W’s Global Engineering function and is responsible for the company’s global licensing strategy. She was named to her position in January 2022.

In April 2020, Johnson was named Vice President of Global Engineering, responsible for overseeing all service and OEM proposal and project engineering activities throughout B&W’s global operations. Before that, from June 2018 until April 2020, Johnson was Vice President, Global Projects, responsible for executing and delivering new build and aftermarket projects for boiler and environmental equipment customers around the world.

Previous B&W positions included serving as Vice President, Global Project Development, Director, Supply Management, and Team Champion for the company’s Global Competitiveness Initiative.

Johnson joined the company in 1995 as a Field Service Engineer.

She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M University, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Kent State University, and an Advanced Master Certificate in Integrated Supply Management from Michigan State University’s Executive Development Program. She is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Ohio, a PMI Certified Project Management Professional, and has participated in several leadership development opportunities, including the 2016 B&W Executive Development Program led by Korn Ferry. She is also a contributing author to B&W’s 41st edition of Steam/its generation and use.
