Refrac technology improving everyday, creating more production potential

Part 2-of-5 in a Series on ReFracs in the Bakken

One of the newer trends many in the industry are talking about is the technology of refracking. This buzzword is creating an image of a strategy to cut costs and boost production output. Although previous refracturing technologies were unpredictable and not very productive, Whiting Petroleum is seeing success with their refracturing projects.

Host Jason Spiess asked Charles Ohlson, Whiting Petroleum, about the technology behind refracs and the recovery percentage predictions of the Bakken oil fields.

“I think you hit the nail on the head…through fracking technology, we are seeing better and better results on newly completed wells,” Ohlson said. “We’ve recognized that we can go back to these older wells and apply a lot of those same learnings to refracs and certainly increase the reserves that we draw from these older wells.”

He also discusses how Whiting has been using more refracs due to increased production results.
